An exhibition by Helsinki-based artists Jarkko Räsänen and Grégoire Rousseau is on view in Tetris exhibition space in Pristina this week. How did the artists end up in Pristina?
– Both of us have contacts in Pristina, and we wanted to come and meet them. Bringing the exhibition here was made possible by support from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Arts Council of Uusimaa.
Kosovo is an interesting place for Räsänen’s and Rousseau’s exhibition.
– French philosopher Louis Althusser states in his book “Pour Marx” that end of dogmatism leads to the necessary freedom for human being but can as well release high fever, when everything is suddenly allowed. This was seen when Yugoslavia collapsed, says Rousseau.
Rousseau’s installation “Single Rule”, that is on display in the exhibition, combines electronics with Althusser’s (1918–1990) texts.
The series “Sampling, Scaling, Actualisation” by Räsänen and Rousseau is originally a proposal for World Design Capital Helsinki stamp design competition. It consists of pictures of photographs of circuit boards that make the existence of digital reality possible.
Räsänen’s and Rousseau’s sound performance that will be performed on Thursday the 11th of April also originates from the structures of the circuit boards. After the sound performance there will be a video screening that consists of video art by FixC co-operative members Maria Duncker, Juha van Ingen, Erkka Nissinen, Seppo Renvall, Jarkko Räsänen and Kari Yli-annala. The performance starts at Tetris (Mark Isaku 24) at 18:00.
The exhibition is on display until Friday the 12th of April. The artists are present daily at 13–18. Discussions with the visitors have been interesting for them.
– Each visitor comments art from their own point of view. The discussions give us new perspective and help us to develop our work further, says Räsänen.
